Give 'em SUM love
Joe Barrlinks provides us with a way to add eye-candy to the otherwise boring boot sequence of Ubuntu. One only needs to get the StartUp Manager (SUM) and start getting creative. He concludes

But I think the main thrust of the project is for fun, to allow advanced users to tweak the default splash settings and make their Ubuntu installation unique.


But hey! Who wants a boring boot-up screen, right? I hope that this package gets included to the main distribution trunk soon.
