Hacker Installs Debian on a T-Mobile G1

Jay Freeman, a.k.a. saurik, has managed (and it ain't easy...) to install Debian on a T-Mobile G1 smartphone.

"If you persevere through the required steps, you'll be rewarded with a device which is capable of running both Google's Android and the Debian install, giving you the best of both worlds: an unrestricted OS with a massive selection of applications available, and a specially designed mobile 'phone platform with all the tweaks one would expect," writes bit-tech.net's Gareth Halfacree.

"Debian likely isn't going to be picked up by too many T-Mobile G1 owners out there, but the geekiest of among them will be happy to hear that Debian gives you full control over your G1's filesystem and allows you to install whatever applications you might want," notes IntoMobile's Will Park.

"If you're interested in getting your hands dirty and playing with Debian-on-G1, Freeman has set up a G1-Hackers mailing list, where you can find like-minded individuals to chat with," writes Ars Technica's Erica Sadun.
