Nokia and Intel have introduced MeeGo, a Linux operating system based on Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin.
"The companies hope that by joining forces under the banner of the Linux Foundation, MeeGo will be for mobile what Linux has been for enterprise servers," writes CNET News' Dave Rosenberg.
"MeeGo is intended for advanced smartphones, tablets, netbooks, in-vehicle technology and even connected televisions," writes PCWorld's Jared Newman. "It supports ARM architectures — commonly used in advanced smartphones and smartbooks — and Intel's Atom processor. The first devices should launch in the second half of 2010."
"While the jury is out on whether we need another mobile OS, MeeGo 'will acelerate industry innovation and time-to-market for a wealth of new internet-based applications and services and exciting user experiences,' according to reps from both Intel and Nokia, at a Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona," writes Gizmodo's Kat Hannford.
