The following are some great gifts for people that love Linux. With the Linux Foundation Visa Card, the Linux Foundation, which supports Linux in all its forms gets $50 immediately and a percentage of all purchases as well. It is a great way to support Linux and can be used to by other Linux related gifts too. An Android tablet is a perfect gift for Linux-lovers, the Nook Tablet is quite soft on the pocket as well. The Chromebook, a lightweight netbook that runs on Chrome-OS is quite a steal at $299 and a lovely gift. For those that are a bit strapped for cash, there are a variety of Linux gifts available such as Linux T-shirts, mugs and other odds and ends. Additionally, CafePress, ComputerGear and Zazzle have a nice selection of low-priced gifts.

Ubuntu is the top Linux distribution world wide. It has enabled less technically sophisticated Linux users to easily run the open source software on their desktops for the first time. Ubuntu uses GNOME as it's preferred desktop solution, and this project has recently announced a major overhaul which is equivalent to a jump from XP to Windows 7.

Many people prefer Linux because with a little effort it is infinitely customizable. Enterprising hackers have packaged their own customizations into distributions which each have a distinctive flavor, including Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Crunchbang, E-Live, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, and SUSE. The new version of GNOME, called GNOME 3.0, is currently supported by the openSUSE and Fedora projects. It has been under construction for five years, and there are major changes to the look and feel of the system which has been designed with the cloud in mind.

Ninite is a small maker of bulk software installation tools for Windows and Linux. The company is newly profitable, and its co-founders continue to be its only employees. They run a lean operation out of their San Francisco office and are not interested in raising venture capital.

Their focus is on being the easiest way for people to get software. And they seem to be succeeding at that, because as one of the co-founders remarked, the most frequent feedback they get from users is "I love you." Ninite gives users the ability to install dozens of applications with just a few clicks, stripping out all the tedious navigation and hassle usually involved in software installation. The installer automates installs off-screen, always grabs the latest available version of apps, picks the most appropriate version and language edition, and auto updates installed software. Ninite's site now gets 2 million page views each month.

It is being observed that growing popularity of Ubuntu 11.04 provides promising future to Linux. The basics are same as in many Linux distributions, but it is based on Debian Linux. With an emerging awareness of buying Linux based operating system, Ubuntu may become a popular Linux-based distro. There are a couple of things which can be still improved about it.

If you like Ubuntu 11.04, but not the Unity desktop, then you will not have to wait longer for the next release Linux Mint 11.
If you like Debian, you may use recently released Debian 6.0.

If you require something more advanced, along with Ubuntu, you can make use of SimplyMEPIS.
Open your minds and move towards the Debian Family!

The Linux Foundation has proclaimed five Linux users as "gurus" this year, a title they award to those who have made outstanding contributions to the FOSS community. Linux works so well because of the community of pro bono tech support and IT experts who contribute their knowledge and provide answers to user questions via forums and Q&A boards. In the world of OS's without operating manuals, these open source experts provide vital support to new and experienced users alike. So the criteria that the Linux Foundation used to pick its roster of true gurus was based on participation and contribution on community blogs, message boards, and Q&A forums.

Of the five gurus selected, Matthew Filpot ranked first as this year's Ultimate Linux Guru. He is a technology enthusiast who is constantly working on new projects for nothing more than to gain new knowledge, and he will be receiving a fully loaded "Dream Linux Machine" along with his title.

Canonical has recently released a new version of Ubuntu, second beta. It was on Thursday at Pacific Time that the Ubuntu team delivered the beta, code-name Natty Narwhal, Ubuntu 11.04. The earlier version of Ubuntu, first beta 11.04 was released two weeks back in various editions for desktops, servers and netbooks. Kate Stewart, Canonical's Ubuntu release manager told that the team has been working hard on the project since Beta 1, fixing the bugs and making things nice. Jono Bacon, the Ubuntu community manager also Tweeted that Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 is out. He showed urge for finding bugs and testing it well since it is the last beta in the series. Natty Narwhal is a quite serious matter for Canonical since the company has dropped GNOME and used Unity for its interface specially designed for multi-touch, but has thwarted the separate netbook edition for its Linux distro. It has combined this netbook edition with the main code.
